16 & 16A Linden Way, Castlecrag

On a prominent site in Sydney sits an extensive family residence that commands an enviable 270-degree view over the harbour.

The current building is comprised of three parts, with the first designed by prominent architect, John R Brogan, back in the 1950s.  Whilst much of the architectural style showcases details from the Arts and Crafts movement, the property has been added to extensively over the years and now lacks identity.

Our brief is to preserve the building’s fabric on the existing building, where the turret and gable sit, and the guest house with the pool, taking care to celebrate and express the craftmanship.  The new design proposes demolition of the middle part of the property to make way for a new, more workable building that connects the two wings, whilst incorporating a grander interpretation of the original design detail.

Due to its elevated position, the site is affected by wind.  The architects at Dreamscapes have therefore based the new plan on the formation of an H-shaped building.  The ‘H’ is staggered, which means that the residents of the property will be able to enjoy protection from the harsher weather conditions in the outside spaces.

The main entrance of the building will be centrally situated in the middle of the ‘H’ design.  Either side of that foyer will lead to the living spaces.  On one side there will be the kitchen and dining areas, and to the other, there will be wet areas.  Upstairs from these wings will be two apartments for extended family.

The old part of the house will become the more casual and informal space for the children, with a rumpus room, recreational space and guest accommodation.
